Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline, reencounters or remembers his past: his childhood in a village, the first desire, his first adult love in 80s Madrid, the pain of that breakup. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and also finds his salvation.
Join Dr. Terri Carney as we examine the work of Spain's prolific filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. We will view as many as twelve of his twenty-two films at Kan-Kan Cinema.
Almodovar's films are works of art: they burst with color and stun with their precise compositions. His plotlines are labyrinths replete with coincidences and hilarious secondary characters. We will explore many of the cinematic techniques and themes that have come to define his style, which include miscommunications, liminal spaces, mise en scene, marginal characters, urban/rural divide, metafiction, nationalisms, gender, and sexual liberation.
