This program offers two extraordinary films set in Southeast Asia, each exploring a different kind of journey: one through cultural rediscovery and the other through wildlife rescue. Together, these stories capture the richness of the region while illuminating the diverse paths of connection that link past and present, human and animal. The Empathizer (Feature Documentary) In Vietnam, decades after the end of the war, the children of Vietnamese refugees return to the homeland they know only through family stories. Comedian Fred Le takes viewers on an intimate journey, following overseas-born Vietnamese professionals who have come back to explore their heritage and unravel the meaning of "home." Through Le’s insightful and often humorous interviews, the film examines the pull of cultural identity across borders and generations, revealing the bittersweet layers of returning to a place both foreign and familiar. Bear Guardians (Short Documentary) In the forests of Cambodia, a father-daughter wildlife rescue team dedicates their lives to protecting sun and moon bears endangered by poaching. Their work to rehabilitate two bears who lost limbs in brutal snare traps captures a different kind of journey: the fight to restore what has been harmed in nature. This intimate portrayal of dedication and compassion offers a powerful glimpse into the challenges of wildlife conservation in Southeast Asia and the enduring bond between people and the animals they strive to protect.
