Films From the Fjords: Beloved

In a small coastal town, Asle and Gerd find each other in a tavern and become parents to a boy, building a seemingly-idyllic life in the crook of the fjord. But soon enough, their perfect love is put to test. Asle, a sailor, is inexorably drawn by the call of the sea, leaving Gerd alone with the child as distance grows between them. Told in Fosse’s minimalist style, through silence, glances and landscape, the story rests on deep compassion for three lives, and asks how much distance love can endure before it breaks.
